Track My Giving FreeThe word “tithe” literally means “a tenth.” The pattern goes back to Abraham giving Melchizedek a tenth of everything (Genesis 14:20) and is formalized in the law given to Israel (Leviticus 27:30). Malachi 3:10 calls it bringing “the whole tithe into the storehouse.” Today, most churches teach 10% of income as the tithe, with anything given above that considered a freewill offering.
Two questions come up almost every time: gross or net? and is 10% actually required? Scripture doesn’t settle either one with a single verse — both are matters of conviction. What it’s consistent about is the posture behind giving: cheerful, first-fruits, not given “reluctantly or under compulsion” (2 Corinthians 9:7).
